Art ExhibitedPhotographs from the Sesquicentennial are still on display. All are historical photographs of Mulberry and the surrounding area. Other items that were displayed during the Sesquicentennial can now be found in binders to view. Also on display are Maori masks from New Zealand that were donated by Gene and Linda Marshall. The masks are carved representations of ancestors, with eyes inset with paua shells. The two carved faces are examples of ancestor figures and are similar to those found on Maori meeting houses. The faces usually look fierce, often with the mouth open, the tongue sticking out, and the eyes protruding. The expression is aggressive and looks like the grimaces that Maoris make during war dances in order to intimidate their opponents. The lines on the masks mirror Maori tattoos, which they traditionally had on their faces to make them look fierce and scare off their enemies. The masks on display at the library were carved in Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand, a center of Maori culture and the site of Te Puia, an institute for preserving and encouraging Maori culture, especially wood and jade (greenstone) carving, and flax weaving.
