Email I received:
Please name some people who refute calvin.
I need to read their stuff.
Thanks-John
My Email reply:
John,
If you only purchased
one book where the author refutes Calvinism, then get "The Other Side of
Calvinism" by Laurence M. Vance (published by Vance
Publications ). He reviews the book and tells more about it on
his own website. 466 pages of exhaustive coverage of the issue; with
detailed references and scriptural tables.
Of course, Norman Geisler "Chosen But Free" (Bethany House Publishers).
A good DEBATE book would be "Predestination & Free Will"; edited by David Basinger & Randall Basinger ((published by Inter Varsity Press) IVP). In this book are comparative views of John Feinberg (Calvinist), Norman Geisler (moderate Calvinist who does believe in free will as well), Bruce Reichenbach and Clark Pinnock (Arminian-free will and foreknowledge by God of our free will choices, but not forced predestination as Calvinists suggest and interpret).
Samuel Fisk has a book titled (Seeing Both Sides...) "Divine Sovereignty and Human Freedom" (published by Loizeau Brothers). A lot of quotes from theologians in the past on the reconciliation of the two sides.
William Lane Craig has a good book titled "The Only Wise God" (published by Baker publishers). Again, God can have perfect foreknowledge without forcing human actions!
John R. Rice (Sword of the Lord Publishers) has a good 103 pages book by the title of "Predestined For Hell?" Page for page, one of the best books you can acquire. Curtis Hutson (also Sword of the Lord Publishers) has a pamphlet titled "Why I Disagree With All Five Points of Calvinism". Sword has their own website. They are in Murfreesboro, TN and publish a very attractive newspaper every couple of weeks that stresses evangelism of the old time Bible preachers. Full sermons are printed in each issue.
Clark H. Pinnock has two books on this subject: "Grace Unlimited" (Bethany House) and "The Grace of God The Will of Man" (Zondervan). Pinnock makes the case for Arminianism which is the theological opponent of Calvinism. My understanding of pure Arminianism is to teach that those saved can fall out of salvation of their own free will. This doctrine I totally reject; as I believe in eternal security, but I believe in the free will to align ourselves with God's offer of salvation-not forced love. As Geisler said in "Roots of Evil" (great little book, but out of print); "forced love is rape!"
I'm sure all of these books can be found at Amazon.com or at the websites of the individual publishers. I hope this is what you were looking for.
With kindest regards, I remain,
yours truly,
Kenny Wolf
P.S. Since writing
the above letter to this individual, I've discovered that the
bestselling author, researcher, lecturer and scholar Dave Hunt put out
a book in 2002 titled "What Love Is This? Calvinism's
Misrpresentation of God" (paperback published by Loyal
Publishing-www.loyalpublishing.com). To be fair and complete in
mention of this book, I must say that it has come to my attention that
many Calvinists are very distressed that Dave Hunt put this book in
print and their claims are that he misrepresented them and their
Calvinist icons all throughout the book. Since we don't yet burn
books of this nature, yet, in America, readers will have to decide for
themselves which side is correct with their freedom to read or not to
read any criticism of the philosophy of Calvinism.
