Liberals Need Only Hold On
---Linda Bowles  May 12, 1997

To win, liberals need only to hold on.  Their policies and programs, long in place and deeply entrenched, are channeling America in the desired direction.  Conservatives can only try to stem the prevailing tides until the American people send reinforcements.

But will they?  The famous historian and philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville greatly admired the fierce independence and creative genius of the American people.  However, he understood human nature.  Writing in 1840, he expressed this fear about us:

"The prospect really does frighten me that they may finally become so engrossed in a cowardly love of immediate pleasures that their interest in their own future and in that of their descendants may vanish, and that they will prefer tamely to follow the course of their destiny rather than make a sudden energetic effort necessary to set things right."

Time is running out for setting things right.  The egalitarian mind-set of left-wing Americans has metastasized.  It has infected our foreign policy.  The redistribution of American wealth and resources now extends beyond our borders.
We have given the benefits of American citizenship to people who are illegally in our country.  We have sacrificed American companies and jobs to Third World competitors.  And we are systematically funneling our technological secrets to foreign countries.
