Methyl tertiary butyl ether
MTBE
It all began as an alarming story on a national news service, concerning the compound MTBE. The compound is a fuel additive, that helps lower emissions in large cities. In those areas where it is used, it has been found that a very small amount of it can cause tremendous problems if it manages to impose itself upon a local underground water supply. Upon hearing the story, we contracted to have our wells tested for this substance. I'm very happy to report, that it was undetected in any of our wells. As this will be a continuing problem, we will add this to our list of items that we routinely test for.
For more information on MTBE, please visit the Environmental Protection Agency's pages on the subject. It is very good. EPA MTBE Information

Beginning with the second quarter of 2000, MTBE is now routinely included as part of the testing done when we sample for VOC's. The result from the MTBE Testing will be shown with the results of that quarter's VOC testing.
**2003 Note**
This has become a continuing story, as there is a push on by the Petroleum Industry to do away with the fines imposed on those locations that had leakage that in turn contaminated a local water supply. This could truly affect everyone, and we hope that everyone becomes involved.
